This Caribbean country is also considered a world leader in Organic and Fair Trade Cocoa. Our Cocoa is grown on the North Coast around the Puerto Plata region and in Gaspar Hernandez, just 25km east of the world-famous Kite Surfing Mecca Cabarete.
Cocoa was introduced to the island of Hispaniola around the late 16th and early 17th century. The Dominican Republic takes a unique place amongst the Cocoa producing nations with 85% of the plantations considered high quality genetic material, basically of Trinitario and Criollo origin.
This manifests itself through its organoleptic characteristics: flavor, acidity, astringency, sweetness, smell, fragrance, persistence in the mouth and unique flavors (dried fruit and others).
It’s these fine flavor features like fruitiness or walnut aroma that are required by specialty chocolate makers for dark or high quality chocolate. The Dominican Republic is amongst the leading exporters of Fine Flavor Cocoa together with Ecuador and Peru.
